There are a few tropes in the 21th century cinema that this movie carries on. A few created by StarWars and a few other cancer is coming from all over us.

---------- Plot twists

There are end game plot twists. Only a few. I did not expect them, although I should have. They did not bother me, because they were character-driven and they gave the spice of the end of the movie. And it is not a happy ending for sure. The ending has a "the past is the past, I will forget it, now I will forge my future don't cry for me" feeling which is unique to a StaWars film. We know what is coming after all.

--- --------------------------The pace of the movie sucks.
In short: there is so much action cramped in so short time we don't feel the danger at all. This is the movie's cancer, why I don't like it. An example on how it should have been done by eps IV:

The opening scene of the New Hope was a long cut as the Corelian Corvette was being chased by the Star Destroyer.  We knew the corvette was not going anywhere, we saw that from the sheer size of the destroyer, the number of hits it took. We saw the reality of the fight, even though it was a sci-fi scene. The more you show us something the more invested we are getting in it, the bigger the deal is. We saw the outcome detail by detail and we understood that Tattooine was Nowhere the best and that the 2 droids have no chance. Luke needed 4 minutes to be introduced. We got the feeling.

In comparison we had a rush from the opening few minutes with 2 car chases, a fight scene, some smuggling and a loss of a girlfriend, who meant us (me) absolutely nothing. Maybe if I saw how life was at Corelia, maybe if I saw how Solo had to deal with that planet for a few minutes, maybe if we had time to sink in, his escape scene would meant something.

That was rushed. If we had some time to sit back and enjoy Han's "victory", the payoff, we would have had the time to finally sit back and relax.

Instead, we find Han on the battlefield. 3 minutes of chaos, pointless action and death. At that point I asked myself why am I watching this movie. Han realizes he needs to escape and finds himself a team of smugglers. They don't want to take him in, there is some discipline and we meet Chewbacca in a cage. Han and Chewie fight for a short time and then make an escape plan. 10 minutes passed since Han left Corelia.

Later we have a prizon break (faster than how they free Leia) and a nice escape with cargo. In the Kessel cloud a Star Destroyer meets them, some tie fighter combat is rushed, also they evade asteroids, come to escape a brutal size space kraken, a black hole, an escape from the accretion disc, 2 colliding planets like Odisseus had before Skülla - all in 10 minutes. WHY AM I WATCHING THIS MOVIE?????

And this goes on....

---------------------------- The characters are on point!
What is new and FANTASTIC IS THAT THE MOVIE IS DRIVEN BY THE CHARACTERS, NOT SOME HOLY QUEST THEY HAVE TO DO. We failed... so... we try again. Next big plan? Ok, we do that. Then...we improvise!!!! It is... I think this is the only StarWars movie that does not feel linear and... laid out maybe?

When the New Solo has some time to relax, he is a charming person. A plan is always in his sleeve. We love Lando. In both card games and introduction of the Falcon, the movie finally has the charm. We finally see the actors act. The smuggler team's each member has a personality of their own. And their death scene - the train - is long enough to take in. Their lives had meanings, because they were flushed out from the start.
The girl who loved Han... they.. had chemistry. I got to know less about her than the smugglers.

Also the best character in the movie is the droid. AGAIN!!! LOTR's best is Gollum, the hobbit's best is SMAUG! Solo comes second, because I somewhat did not notice him acting. Because of the droid. Nothing like Han wasn't that great, but somebody decided to push the droid in my face and I DON'T LIKE IT!

So... Han wants to free his girlfriend, to be the best pilot and ends up being a smuggler with the Falcon and Chewie. That is his arc. His goal has to change from minute to minute. I don't really get what he is getting from all of that, I am not that type, so that was a minus type for me.

So, the rebel bunch. Apparently because the team freed the slaves and decided to give away the fuel (it takes no money to fund a rebellion it seems), the rebels help them. Their leader is so pretty! I don't know, she felt real, heroic, but maybe too strong for her possible losses. I would have expected Brianne of Tarth, someone more rugged. Not a big deal.

AAAAAND WE HAVE MAUL! I had a wtf when I saw him. Some fans must be raging, some fell in love. Somehow neither Vader nor Palpatine knew or cared. You know, the rule of 2 or something... and we had a mention of a lightsaber duel form (Surisu?), but the guy only could use the feetwork of it, because he had 2 short blades which are not compatible with lightsaber use. Not my problem. I don't take Maul's appearance as a plot hole.

---------------------------------Plot holes

1- minor) So either hyperspace fuel is so expensive or it is easy to fund a rebellion.
2 - stupid) What if the bad guy assumed the fuel Han brought him was real and bought it?
3 - Not sure) Sooo an imperial general drove his star destroyer into the Kessel cloud. And he could navigate through it. And let tie fighters chase the Falcon inside. Either he is a genius or a total idiot.

-----------------------------Annoyances we inherited from other episodes

Hoooray, we started from the ultra slums to get to a war and see lot of cramped-damped slavery and really poor people and I did not care at all and we saw a golden casino (again after eps 8) that was so unmodest that now I refused to vomit. It is starting to get boring even if it is the second time I see this comparison.  It did not get through, your storytelling could not make it relevant.
