Usually a sword or dagger is made from separate parts such as the blade, the crossbar, the hilt and the pommel and they are put together by the smith in the end. The secret is really simple: the smith creates branches while working on the blade and leaves them untill it is finished and only then starts to curve and carve them to the special form. It is not less work but they do it because they can and think that their works can be called special this way and sold at a higher price at foreign markets. They got that last one right.
