The Red Blade has been the sword of the Xianbei King since well before anyone can remember, or any records were made, passing from father to son for centuries. The number of battles that it must of been a part of can be seen in the sword, partly from the age of its design, and partly from massive amount of scaring on the blade itself. Its name doesn't seem to describe anything, until it's been used in combat, doused in the enemy's blood, as Xianbei soldiers will proclaim, it is at its most beautiful.
All Nurhachi knows of the Red Blade is from when he's faced it, just not its name. It's been treated well, as evidenced by the tightly wound golden silk pad on the handle, and the bronze hilt, that while now darkened by age, still shines from fresh polishing. The design of the blade comes before counter balancing was developed, allowing the dark blade (meaning a low carbon content iron) to carry most of the sword's weight. This makes the blade an excellent cavalry weapon, just not as good at anything else. But somehow on foot, when wielded by one of the family, the sword is able to match some of the best designed swords, and well trained swordsmen. Anytime he's faced it, Nurhachi has been frustrated by attacks that match Tairoi blow-for-blow. He has figured that the family teaches it's sons to use the sword from a very young age, so that when it passes to them, they know its every strength and weakness, and the family's techniques for overcoming those weaknesses. Whether it's true or not, Nurhachi has learned to treat the wielder of this weapon as deadly adversary, despite its age.
Compared to first view the crossbar seems a bit Autobot.
