During the day the decoration shines like gold, during the night, not entirely. The caster must not fail and the main reason the roves were designed so because the caster must be in terrible conditions, like maintaining a portal or vital spell in battle, casting while jumping or falling or during close combat. So how? These robes are enchanted to remember the spell as it progresses, so whatever the caster thinks up, a lapse of concentration cannot do any harm. It is a hole different path if the caster does not have enough skills to cast the spell. Somehow for the enchanters even that was possible. But only out of combat!
